Below are our most commonly asked questions. If your query isn't listed or you need further information, do get in touch we're always happy to help.
Why do you only sell works of art made on paper?
Founded by artists, we know first-hand the freedom that can arise from working on paper - its immediacy nurtures a latitude of expression, technique and aesthetic. Accessing an artist's work on paper often reveals a wealth of intimate and dynamic pieces for collectors, invariably at a more accessible price than work by the same artist on canvas or board. TORN Contemporary opens this world up for you.
How do you assure the artwork's authenticity?
Whenever you buy an artwork from TORN Contemporary it is packaged and shipped by the artist themselves. And for provenance, each artwork is sent with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
Why is the artwork sold unframed?
All artworks sold through TORN Contemporary are unframed. Framing styles and costs vary widely - we'd like to give you the freedom to choose a frame which speaks to your own aesthetics, at a price that feels good for you. We don't offer a framing service, but we're happy to advise on which framing options might work best with your selected artwork.
Do you arrange commissioned artwork?
Many of the TORN artists are happy to work on commission. If you'd like to commission an artwork from one of our artists, just send us message and we'll guide you through the process.
What is acid-free paper and why does it matter?
Acid is responsible for many of the changes seen over time in everyday paper, such as the yellowing of old newspapers. Acid-free paper addresses this problem, creating a stable base to preserve the artwork. When a TORN artist has deliberately chosen to use paper which is not acid-free, we have detailed it in the individual artwork description.
How should I look after my new artwork?
Light, heat and humidity all have an effect on paper, so to protect them, works of art on paper need to be framed. As with most artworks, it's best not to hang them in direct sunlight, above heat sources such as a radiator or in places which are subject to frequent changes in temperature. A leaflet describing how to care for your artwork while it's waiting to be framed, is included with every artwork package, please read this before unwrapping your new work.
Do you sell gift vouchers?
Not yet, but we have plans to. If you'd like to be the first to know when they arrive, join our newsletter and we'll send you a message.
How are TORN artists selected?
We pride ourselves on carefully selecting artists who demonstrate a thorough exploration of their chosen subject matter and style. We consider these indicators of passion, dedication and curiosity - qualities we respect and are excited to work alongside. We mostly represent artists who have established careers, but we also feature emerging artists whom we believe are creating artwork worth shouting about.
Where are TORN artists based?
Currently, all of our artists are based in the United Kingdom, but we have plans to extend our representation to international artists in the near future. To be the first to hear a new artist joins the TORN family, please sign up to our newsletter.
How can I apply to be a TORN artist?
If you've read about us and you feel you'd be a good fit for our aesthetic and ethos, please send your bio/CV and a links to view your artwork to firstname.lastname@example.org.
