Making art is rarely a singular-sensory experience. There's a scent unique to each artist's studio, variations in light and temperature as the day progresses and the seasons change. Often there's the taste of morning coffee and there is always, always sound.
Even for those who make art in ‘silence’, their making will be accompanied by the sounds of the studio - the scrub of brush against paper, the clink of ferrule against glass as those brushes are cleaned.
We do not make art in a vacuum, so why should it be viewed in one?
We want to welcome you into the world of our artists, and as a virtual gallery, we're excited to play with new ways of doing that. Many artists use music as an integral part of their creative process - to shape, reflect, shift and challenge what is appearing in front of them.
An aural portal you can use to peek inside our artists' studios as they create the works you see in the gallery. Selected by the artist themselves - each song listed, was either played during the making of that artwork, inspired it, or echos the essence of it.
In time, we'll create playlists for each of our artists, adding to them as new artworks are added to the gallery. For the inaugural playlist however, TORN artist Jesse Leroy Smith felt like the natural choice - you'll rarely walk by his studio without hearing a celebration of music playing.
We've made Jesse's playlist available on Spotify - just click the link below each artwork to listen in.
